Cantilevered Pergola and Cedar Hot Tub Projects - Some Assembly Required!

Sometimes it’s good to pause after an interior renovation before completing the exterior decks. There are so many decisions to be made during a reno and when you finally see the finished space, your vision may continue to evolve – ours did!

Below is a photo of the side deck just after the reno but before we had figured out how to finish this deck.

We quickly realized we needed to extend the deck and have some sort of covered dining area. We love the side and back composite decks and stairs that Aaron and his team at www.rempellandscapes.ca installed for us. They are maintenance free and will last a lifetime! While the team from Rempel was here, we asked to have 3 – 6x6 posts installed because Don had a vision. With only his crew of trusty ladders, he designed and built a freestanding cantilevered pergola! I wish we had more photos of this engineering feat in progress! It really is a work of art! The Baco Noir grapevines quickly grew over the pergola, making for a special dining experience right outside our door!

While looking for inspiration on Pinterest and throwing around ideas for the back deck area, we really liked the look of round cedar hot tubs. We decided to order a Cedar Hot Tub Kit from www.canhottub.com  to replace our old hot tub. You can choose to have a local contractor assemble the kit, but we gave it a go ourselves.  It arrived on a pallet, with lots of labeling and clear online step-by-step video clips. The company is also quick to respond to any questions along the way. Before starting though, we had to figure out the measurements for the surrounding decking and how to weather-proof and insulate the plumbing and pump. This was not a quick or easy project by any means, but the result was what we were looking for and, in our opinion, worth the effort! The model we chose is called Muskoka and is perfect for two, quiet and very easy to maintain.

This is the before photo with the old hot tub waiting to be picked up by it’s new owners!

Our bundle of joy arrived!

Once the hot tub and surrounding deck were finished, we built a cedar planter box skirt around the sitting room addition with two moveable sections for access should we need it. Everything is stained with www.cutekstain.com colour - Walnut.
